The Eagle River High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) was established on 01 July 2006, is designated as AK-20061, and is the newest Junior ROTC unit in the State of Alaska. The Corps is presently under the supervision of Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) David Ennis, Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, and Chief Master Sergeant (Ret) William A. McNew, Aerospace Science Instructor.

In our 3rd year, the Eagle River JROTC program has come a long way in a short period receiving recognition from Headquarters AFJROTC as a Distinguished Unit for the second straight year--a direct reflection of our cadets' commitment. Cadet enrollment continues to increase from 63 cadets in our first year to currently 87. We hope to continually increase that number each year by a minimum of 5 cadets. We have designated the unit as a squadron with four flights, and support staff. The leaders of the squadron have done a tremendous job here at ERHS. We have established Color Guard and Drill Teams who have won numerous trophies in competitions around the state of Alaska. Community Service continues to be an important part of our program as last year the corps completed over 2,500 hours, reaching our goal. Cadets enjoyed our annual field trip to Elmendorf, the military ball, physical fitness competitions, survival training, and civic luncheons; hosted the JROTC bowling tournament; and raised funds to purchase drill team equipment, held pizza parties, and put on a cadet "Lock-in." We attended a joint summer leadership school this summer with West H.S. where cadets were groomed for future leadership positions within AK-20061.

The mission of AFJROTC is to "develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community." Ideally, each cadet will have the opportunity to serve in a leadership position over the course of their tenure. Cadets of AK-20061 are rapidly developing esprit-de-corps, personal pride, and local traditions that will become legacy. Each cadet has contributed in some way to the success of AK-20061.
